Yes. This is as good as it sounds! When I put the first little square in my mouth, still warm from the oven with hot, sweet, sticky orange blossom syrup doused all over it, I knew I had to share this recipe with you all.
Ingredients
Time to prep: 10 mins Baking (45 mins) Eating: all of it, don’t share! Serves: (20)
1 pack of ready made filo pastry – who has the time to make it! And it’s just as good if not better, pre made!
400 gms unsalted peanuts
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp orange blossom syrup
250gm butter – melted
350 gms caster sugar
300 ml water
a big glug of runny honey
Method
- Pre heat oven to 180′ c (fan assisted)
2) Melt butter
3) Blitz the nuts and cinamom in a food prosessor
4) Brush melted butter over the bottom of your chosen tin. I suggest using a loose bottom tin so that you can easily remove the baklava when set.
5) Layer one slice of filo pastry over the bottom, then brush with melted butter, repeat another two times.
6) Scatter the nut and cinnamon mixture over the 3 layers of buttered pastry.
7) Repeat steps 5 & 6 until all of the nut mixture has been used.
8) Score into diamond shapes/squares and place in the centre of the oven.
9) Bake for around 45 minutes or until golden brown and crisp on top.
10) Whilst the baklava is baking, make the syrup
11) Add water, sugar, cinnamon, honey, orange blossom water and cloves to a pan.
12) Bring to a boil then reduce heat and let it simmer until it becomes sticky and reduced in quantity
13) When baklava is cooked, remove from oven and immediately pour the hot sticky syrup all over it.
14) Try and resist eating util it has cooled down, you may get a burned mouth otherwise!
